Established in 1971, The Gove Boat Club is the sailor’s gateway to the Northern Territory.
Located in Melville Bay 12 kilometres from the town of Nhulunbuy at the top of the Gulf of Carpentaria, the club caters to local and visiting yachts and local boating enthusiasts. Facilities at the Gove Boat Club include a dining venue and bar, as well as outdoor and indoor play areas to entertain the kids.
Visiting sailors and campers are always made welcome at the Gove Boat Club and many extend their stay to take in the surrounding region of East Arnhem Land.
HISTORY AT OUR DOORSTEPS
There are some war relics in and around the Gove Peninsula. Historic sites include Drimmie Head where the Catalinas landed in the bay and taxied onto land, remnants of an observation station and rocket tracking station. Yolngu played a significant role in WWII as soldiers and bush guides in the Northern Territory Special Reconnaissance Unit. Many Yolngu men died serving their country. Without their valuable contribution of local knowledge and survival skills the efforts of the Armed Forces may not have been so successful. Many of the old airstrips, bunkers and aircraft wreckage can be seen around Nhulunbuy and throughout the region.
Over several years, the club house and grounds has undergone significant improvements. The volunteer club committee has managed all of this work with generous support from local businesses, Rio Tinto and the Northern Territory Government.
Gove has a long history of keel boat and dinghy sailing. Gove is a key stop over port for sailors traveling across the top of Australia. The club achieved accreditation under Discover Sailing Centres in 2016. The club is accredited by DSC and instructors are accredited in keel boat and power boat delivery.
